Even as the state fisheries department declared it will not be holding the annual fish fair, the Small Industries Development Bank of India, SIDBI, has come to the rescue announcing a fish fair of its own to be held one day ahead of Ningol Chakouba at the Kanchipur Supermarket complex as part of the Heingang mela cum buyers-sellers meet 2001.The mela, organized with the objective of promoting local handicrafts and handlooms, has been organized by the Manipur Women Coordinating Council.
Representatives of the organizing committee said at least 60 fish farmers are expected to participate in the fish fair, including from outside the state.
They disclosed that no prizes or incentives would be awarded to the participants, but the fish farmers will get the opportunity of availing loan facilities from SIDBI through the organizing committee.
Currently, 54 stalls are participating in the fair.
Lismart Industries, which has manufactured polyethylene water storage tanks (Sintex type) for the first time in Manipur under the brand name Sangai has a stall here.
The Fish fair stall operators said the water storage tanks are available in capacities ranging from 300 to 2000 litres, and much cheaper than other brands.
A number of stalls sell handlooms and handicrafts.
They reported sale of, around Rs 3000 per day.
